Tim’s Candy Crane is a fly pattern designed to imitate the realistic look of a cranefly larva nymph, a favorite food for trout.
The segmented body has such a clean, realistic silhouette that trout are taking it on the first drift. I’ve already pulled three solid rainbows from a heavily fished pool using this pattern.
Tied this on during a slow afternoon hatch and the trout couldn’t leave it alone—the realistic larva profile did all the work. Drifted it right along the bottom and got three solid strikes in under an hour.
The segmentation on this fly is spot-on—it really nails that knobby, translucent look of a cranefly larva. My trout started keying in on it immediately after the first few drifts along the bottom. Cast it into a slower pool and you'll see what I mean.
